It will definitely end, as it is clearly unsustainable. The only questions are:

1. How will it end?
2. How long until it ends?
3. What impact (if any) might this have on macro-economic data?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

What's the limit on this? Bezos can pretty much do whatever he wants I think, but Lore must have a cap from the CEO of how much he can spend on this. A couple billion I'd assume?

If that's the case this can easily go on all year. Guess I should invest in a caffeine IV next to my desk.

Bezos has shareholders.

Lore seems to have been given a very long leash, if any.

I recently read that some exercise (IINM it was going up and down steps) is more effective in keeping one awake and alert than caffeine.

I don't think the huge pickup discounts will last that long, it looks like an error to me that could be fixed within a few days. The illogical price matching might last a long time though.

Walmart already won. Neither one is going to put the other out of business. Walmart's purpose is to make themselves a full fledged competition with Amazon. Mission accomplished. The question is how long they will continue it for added publicity.

The pickup discounts are a competitive advantage. Walmart has a huge local footprint, and they save on shipping by shipping to stores.

Walmart also penalizes their vendors for not shipping/packing/labeling as per specs. A vendor can get a $100 fine on a $10 order which wasn't exactly per specs.

I think pickup discounts will stay, but not the 90% off pickup discounts, that's just a mistake. Until today the discount was much more logical.

Too early to call this one.

Publicity? Yes. Full fledged competition? I wouldn't call it that. Amazon is way ahead of them from a technological and end user experience standpoint.

Great point. I never would have even thought of purchasing these things at Walmart, let alone creating an account. Clearly they are the winner.

I'm not sold that they really are losing anything here. it seems like the fake "price mistake". they both are getting a lot of attention and people are grabbing items feeling like they are gaining on a corporate battle. just seems like a good marketing plan to me

It's doorbusters. Limited quantity, drives traffic and awareness.

Except these are much cheaper than the doorbusters you see on Black Friday, and it doesn't apply to all colors. Just seems like a random error to me.

Umm, $10 for a rocker that sells for over $150 everywhere else is definitely a lose somewhere.

If Amazon keeps matching the pickup discounts then WM has no incentive to offer it.
I'm not sure how that ends.

You remind me of the Allstate young girls Whole Life policy of a little over a year ago. That one was definitely a price mistake, but it led to unmatched life insurance sales from a company that's not really big or great in that line. At some point, it became a little too big, and they cut it short. It wasn't designed to be what it is, but when it was discovered, it was used by certain managers to promote sales, and then the Yiddish market caught on, peppered up by DDF, until they were forced to kill it a drop before the original deadline.

I wonder if WM is targeting suppliers that are more likely to get fined, so WM's cost is actually lowered by supplier incompetence.

I'm not sure how that ends.

Walmart is price matching Amazon either way, so once they're selling at that super-low price there's no reason not to offer the pickup discount.
