Has anyone tried manilla.com yet?
« on: June 05, 2011, 07:24:37 AM »
This site seems g-d sent, everything one click away. No more bills in the mail, only new credit cards.

If you're not the customer (since the service is free to you), you're the product (they're selling you one way or another).

How much advertising do they have?

Great quote.  I'm going to steal it....   :)

It distills "free" down to a single sentence.  My explanation is a few sentences longer....

If you're not the customer (since the service is free to you), you're the product (they're selling you one way or another).

How much can advertisements bother if their not a prerequisite to enter?

They're selling you or selling to you?

Selling you, by selling your information (in aggregate) to advertisers.

Assuming they actually store your password.

Edit: Looks like the passwords are stored on a separate server used to retrieve the data.

well, once u log in, you can enter into all your accounts just by clicking on them. so all one would really need is that first password to get in...

They do auto-login to external accounts? I didn't know that. If that's the case they better have ironclad security.

just looking thru the site (although I didn't sign up) and its not clear if it has auto-login or not.  but it seems that u can pay bills, etc on the site. which means its a step up from mint.com where all u can do is view what's going on.

They have 256 SSL encrypting.

256 bit SSL doesn't cover everything. Just because the door (for example) is ironclad, doesn't mean you can't get in though the window...

Why is this different than mint.com, which seams like you're all OK with? I know Dan was afraid of the miles equivalent to this - although he did it anyway.

Mint uses Yodlee, whose primary business is banking security. If Manilla uses Yodlee too, I'd definitely give it a try.
