From my personal experience, I would recommend anyone that goes to PR to go to Vieques and Culebra. Besides checking out Old San Juan and El Yunque, I don't think PR has much to offer. It didn't even feel like being on an island to me. But Vieques and Culebra are really nice. If you can't find accommodations on those islands, you can stay in Fajardo and take the ferry.

i know you had a good experience on Vieques but IMHO there is a lot to do on the main Island as well

Haven't been to either but I'm looking for myself and I was deciding between El Conquistador and Hilton Caribe, seem like the best 2 Hilton options.

The only stopover I could consider is in PR - something like an early afternoon flight STT-SJU, spend a couple of hours in SJU, and then continue on to NY.

Does that even make sense? Is there anything worth doing in SJU for a couple of hours in the afternoon?

Posted this in the Caribbean master thread, but probably makes more sense here. Any thoughts?

This is coming from STT.

Old San Juan sounds perfect.

If you have a little more time, El Yunque would be great.

With that little time, I'd cut out Bacardi and spend some more time in Old San Juan and the castles. Bacardi wasn't that interesting to me.

(I might be biased as I want to see some nice pics from the castles and I won't gain anything by him getting a free drink ).
