I had the exact same case $4k total balance, vender refunded $3.6k instead of $1.8k, I was F/Red one day after the refunded posted.

I've bought cameras for 1k at Costco and had them refunded to a different amex account with no issue

Both were AMEX cards though?

Be careful because costco has a system where they say you can return anything and everything, but supposedly there is a limit per dept. I know people who had issues.
