Do they feel this is a disposable item which needs to be replaced monthly? Lately I have been seeing many of these item which make no sense why they would be S&S.

That is a small disk with some attractant. YOu would replace that by ordering just that cartridge not a whole new item. That would be like having a subscription on a coffeemaker since it needs more filters.
