there is another option discussed here which may fit your situation better (but it won't help dan with a refferal)

Spending 10K or 20K in the first year to get the extra bonus. Does your year start from when you open your card or is it a calendar year ?

It's been done before, by people who called and said they had a ticket on hold and needed to book. YMMV.

my trick:

look for a current mileage promo (at the moment BA 50% bonus) which is expiring relatively soon (5/31 i think) and tell them you want to transfer points while the promo is in effect and you are scared you may miss it. This worked for me on 3 occasions (but usually only a few days from the end of the promo)

What's the best SM department to send a Chase Match request to?
Is it better to wait until you reach the spend requirement and then SM or does it not matter?
