How to go on vacation without children
« on: July 13, 2017, 12:17:42 PM »
When my kids were younger and I wanted to spend a couple of days away with my wife, we could just have them stay by parents/in-laws. Now that they're a bit older (~5 yrs old), they have school, camp, etc; things they can't just skip a few days of (Parents and in-laws live in nearby city, not close enough to drop children off at school).

How do you deal with that?

As the parent you have every right to take them out of school whenever you want to.
So long as they don't miss any "major" trips. :)

That's a good point, Might be an option, though it's a lot more difficult to have, say, a sister in law come and run the house on her own than it would be for my kids to go to their house.

True, I guess...I just don't like the idea of making them miss school. Maybe camp, but that limits the options for the rest of the year.

We had my mother and sister move to our neighborhood. It's great :-)

Can you ask them to stay by you instead?

+1. I don't plan on asking permission to take my kids out of school.  I (and my kids) are customers. I can decide to take more or less of the product.

Be more assertive.

There's no rational reason for schools to bully you.

No ones ever accused me of not be assertive enough :)
It hasnt been relevant yet but from what I hear most schools couldnt care less about their customers and the few interactions with my daughters school administration have confirmed that.

Exactly. Once they get older and missing a day of school actually means something it could be problematic. but at 5?

I've always taken my kids out anytime I wanted and never had an issue.

I am paying a relative to move in. It's $$$ but this way everyone stays on their schedules. We leave suppers for the week prepped to go in the oven (unless it's something like macaroni). We prepare each day's clothing for each kid in a labeled ziploc bag. The biggest thing is of course making sure that whoever is moving in is capable of managing your children and house.

Don't ask stupid questions and you won't get stupid answers

Not necessarily. It obviously depends on the specifics of the situation but having them go to school/camp and following their regular routine might very well be easier.

The sad part is, that actually is a threat in some places.
