Im a bit of a noob on these forums so please forgive if this information is elsewhere but I could not find it.
We are looking to do a multi leg trip using AA miles. We would fly from NY to LA (4 tickets) and spend a weekend there, we would then leave our kids with the in-laws and fly to Hawaii (2 tickets). On the return trip, once again we would fly to LA (2 tickets), spend the weekend and then fly back to NY (4 tickets). American told us that if you leave the airport you have to book the flights as separate flights instead of as a layover. Is there any way around this? It would cost us an extra 90k miles if we have to book the 2 tickets to Hawaii as a separate booking.
