That was me. I tried chatting and that's what they told me.  He was very cordial about letting me downgrade but mention the forfeit as an afterthought.

I closed two cards via SM.
The rep handling one closing gave me the whole scare-down, similar to what was reported here.
The rep handling the other closing didn't mention a word about forfeiting miles.

I saw those posts... but is it anything more substantiated than rumours?
If they were indeed doing this, I reckon I should've earned plenty of clawbacks in the past for DL and UA signup bonuses.

The UA clawback has happened to someone I'd trust.

And CV stated pretty definitively about DL clawbacks.
