Once tickets are booked (assuming you get that far) would they go so far as to cancel them?
Yes

Yes
What about after you've taken the outbound flight already? Is it common for them to do this shortly after ticketing or even right before travel begins?

No. They wanted me to buy miles for the rest of the flight. I told them where to go...

So what did you do? Where were you stranded without a ticket?

Do the cards need to stay open indefinitely? Or if you pay the AF the first year you can close it?

Very long story... It worked out in the end though...

Can't tell you what will be. In my case the card that had the AF paid the first year (statement credit), but was subsequently cancelled, was fine. They actually specifically mentioned the fact that the AF was paid the first year at least.

How long was the layover? I'm looking at booking a trip with a stop in DXB. I can choose a short (2 hour) layover or a longer (17 hour) layover. Do you think that one is safer than the other?

Oh, if that's the case, the cards I cancelled both had the AF paid and then refunded by check. That's not a problem?

If it was refunded to the account because the card was closed (within 60 days), they can see that refund. Unless it was refunded for a different reason.

What I would do is try to open more cards, enough to cover your cards that had no AF paid. Make sure to pay the AF on those, even if they dock 50k your still good.

I believe one was waived, not refunded because it was closed, but I don't really remember.

I did apply for another card, but they wouldn't approve a 2nd card. I do plan on paying the AF on that card (with the $100 Statement credit it won't cost me anything). All I can do is either hope I don't get reviewed or apply for business cards.

Hell. It was only after she told me, and I quote, to "shut up and listen". I almost always keep my cool on these kind of calls, but they were beyond obnoxious! I couldn't get a word in. They just kept screaming over me, it was a disaster!

So get one more Bussiness card. IME the waived fees were fine in the end.

I'll just hope for that. Either way I need my current points to post before I can book anything.

Ok. Do keep in mind that only the waived fees were fine in the end, not the cancelled ones.
