how often is it considered safe to apply for personal and business alaskan cards? should older cards be cancelled first?

no they were shutting down accounts for closing the card to avoid the AF. If you got it waived you were usually OK

still my question stands are people successful in getting AF waived first year with this card?

I personally don't try it. I'm ok with the $100 statement credit and the 30k miles. But that's just me

The companion pass is only on Alaska flights right?  I think they have a decent distance based award  on domestic flight but it seems it has  to be Alaska flights only. I checked for flights out of ORD to several US cities and find NONE , NO Alaska flights except for couple of AA flight and that too the regular 12.5k points one way.

Yeah right not a good card for domestic flight  awards since Alaska airline seems to be operating in very few states NOT in Midwest here.

They've been great for domestic flights for me.  Easily displacing southwest for direct flight availability throughout the west coast.
