my understanding is that a lifeguards main responsibility is preventing kids from drowning not saving them from drowning

My sister took a LG course and the Instructor said that "A good lifeguard is one that never has to save anyone. Its all about prevention" :o :o
Then she bragged "In 25 years, I have yet to jump in to save someone".

Perhaps the most ignorant thing you can say to a group of Lifeguards in training.

Yup, when I was drowning there were like 6 lifeguards on duty and not one jumped in.  I bet she was one of them.

It seems that in order to be certified WSI you need to now be part of a origination and it cost money per year while its always been free. anyone have any insight what can be done here or there is no way out of this? Thanks

Depends on the venue.

Then she bragged "In 25 years, I have yet to jump in to save someone".
was she was the lifeguard of the wading pool?
Maybe we can be medayek on the "Jump in" part. By none of my "saves" did I need to "jump in to save someone."

I agree with her and disagree with you.

I say the exact same thing to my students every course and it is true.

@Henche you never should have been drowning, and I'd like to think as the thousands of kids I've guarded for and none needed saving you wouldn't have either.

I don't mean to sound arrogant, but tell me almost any story of why a kid needed to be saved and I can tell you how it should have been prevented in the first place. A parent should be thankful their kid is safe, but darn right it's a lifeguards responsibility to make sure no one drowns in the first place.

While I agree that one of the most important things in LG is prevention, the LG's should not be told that "If you are a good LG then you never have to jump in".

In my first day on the job this summer, I had to jump in twice! One was a distressed swimmer, other was active drowning.

Ok question:

Why were 2 kids who didn't know how to swim well in an area of the pool where they needed saving? Did you give swim tests before allowing them in the pool?

And no one said a good LG never had to jump in, but the best LG's never had to jump in if they can prevent it and that includes 90+% of drownings IMHO.

I'm with JJ on this one.
While training we were drilled how it's all about prevention. If you're doing it right you'll never even have to jump in.
Obviously it's important to know all the other stuff, but if you can prevent it from happening in the 1st place all the better.
I was lifeguard for 2 years at Gan Israel Montreal. It's a 2 month camp with hundreds of crazy kids, they have a pool and a lake. In 2 years we never had any issues thank g-d. All due to enforcement of good rules and prevention.

Deep water test not next to a wall? Mistake #1. Not noticing they can't make it to a wall before they can't make it to a wall mistake #2.

You can't tell me with better precautions those 2 kids wouldn't have been in that situation. As a counselor I let my campers to many things and get away with it, but they knew in my pool when I'm on duty you don't mess, and it doesn't take screaming just consistency in rules and enforcement.

Like I said almost every situation has something you can prevent.
