Canceling Chase Ink card
« on: July 27, 2017, 12:30:37 AM »
So I made an error and forgot to cancel an older INK card within 30 days of the annual fee hitting (life got busy). Over the phone they said they couldn't help me and that they'd have to charge me the fee.

I was going to HUCA, but instead I decided to walk into my local branch, even though I know that the CCs are not their domain.

The branch person I spoke to helped me navigate other options with the person on the phone that I was not given initially:

  • Convert the INK BOLD card into an INK CASH card. Since the CASH has no annual fee, the $95 annual fee would be prorated down to about $16. This was a no brainer and I took this option.
  • Additionally, he looked at my account and saw that I was paying $18/month on my business checking account, which was an older version of the account. He offered me a newer account option, that with paperless billing, my monthly fees on that account would be $10. Sold!
  • Lastly, he removed the last 2 months of fees on the checking account, for a total of $36 in credit, so I actually netted out with a $20 win (instead of a $95 loss), and saving $8/month on the new account!

Moral of the story is never accept the first no for an answer. Either HUCA, or try a branch. They're much better at making you happy in person.

Would personally like to thank Dan for teaching me this concept. Tzadik.

Was kicking myself that I didn't think of the downgrading to CASH option!

Am I the only one cringing at the fact that someone got rid of an Ink Bold?

Paying the fees every year

What's the updated version better points for that.
I guess I have x5 on gas and office supply. Looking for better solution with multiple points for shops and travel as well?

would you mind sharing what's so unique about the ink bold vs the saphire preferred? the x5 catagories? or something else?
I also just got the AF, and was thinking if it's worth keeping open

What's ppdg?

So I don't have the Bold (and don't know what it's benefits are) but I do have the Ink Plus but recently got the Ink preferred.  I do see that I'm now getting 5x for phone, Internet and GC's at Office Supply (which I use for SW gift cards because I buy a lot of plane tickets for work) but I guess I'm wondering when those two extra points break me even on my $95 fee.  I think I probably spend about $8000 on those three categories, with Ink Plus getting me an extra 16,000 points (because Preffered does give 3ppd) , so I guess I'm netting out a little over a $100 of extra points after accounting for the fee...does that sound right?

Ink preferred doesn't give 3x at office supplies.

Correct but I personally don't do MS and almost all my spend at those stores is SW gift cards which I'll get 3ppd if I just bought the plane tickets normally online.  Although I guess it maybe is worth the AF  and the minor headache.

If you're really only spending $8k/yr and don't see yourself spending more any time soon then I would downgrade it to an Ink Cash.
