Rental problem
« on: September 04, 2011, 05:20:25 PM »
I rented a car from Hertz for a week. When inspecting it before I left, they noted that there were some scratches on the mirror. While I was driving on the highway I saw the mirror start to wobble I pulled over and it fell off.Nothing happened to the car in my care,I am sure that going 65 on the highway for 1/2 an hour dislodged it (it's cracked on the inside)as I never drove above 35 in the city. Should I call them and complain or rent again and take their daily coverage and return it afterwards? In my defense the check engine light was on when I got it & they don't usually rent out cars with that light on,so there were problems before I got it.

Hertz has been known for doing this for years (double charging customers for damage).  Google it and dozens of hits come up.
I have a friend who rented at EWR came back and agent "knew" exactly where all the scratches were. little did he know the persons corporate acct. covered LDW
Moral of the story: unless u have LDW always do a detailed check of the car before leaving and don't rely on the agent saying it's already on the computer or writing for himself, insist on a copy (the 2nd part i learned the hard way)

Your credit card insurance should cover it, otherwise why don't you go to a mechanic and fix it for $10.

P.S. Hertz IMHO is the most lax with damages, enterprise makes millions a year from "damages".

IME hertz is indeed very lax in charging for damages

P.s. Interesting story. I did a one way rental with hertz about 3-4 months ago and hertz still has not charged my CC for that rental

Maybe when u returned it they didn't register it in the computer that it came back. In other words, maybe they waiting for u to "return" the car before billing you.

I called them a month after the return and they said they see that it was returned but since it was one way from Toronto to new York they have to wait for Toronto to do the billing. I guess they lost the paperwork  8)
