its very simple. if you book a traditional aa award ticket with aa partners which includes all oneworld airlines and some non ow such as elal, you are only allowed a stopover in the north american gateway even on one ways.  (RT = 2 stopovers so lax-jfk stopover-tlv-yyz stopover-lax)

theres another product called a OneWorld award, which is a distance based award, and you may stop as long as you want, as long as you dont go over the 16 segments (and some other rules of course)

I just took a trip with BA miles. It was from JFK-SCL(viaLIM)-AKL-SYD in business all for 80k per passanger. This was hard to book since most reps would not let me do it. so just hang up and keep trying until you get someone that can do it.

However, IME, its pretty hard to get the open jaw with the stopover as opposed to the point of turnround
