Yes it was definitely very nice of him to step in. Basically, he gave me the idea of trying to get them to switch to a stopover to ewr so I looked on united.com expert mode (thanks Dan) and found flights thru Cleveland that had k class and I checked the -ewr-man flight for tonight (which I am taxiing right know) and saw 3 k class
So I did my best successful HUCA and got a woman to try and try (she was desperate to get it to work for some reason) and she confirmed my switched as if its was SDC although it was48 hours before my last leg and 28 hours before my first (I think FL needs to update his "rules" :).  And I even got upgraded for my first leg to Cleveland

Awesome, happy to help. I'm only recently getting up to speed on all this stuff. Glad it worked out and you got upgraded!

FT does indicate that if you get the right agent, there is seemingly quite a bit of rule bending for the SDC.

Also need to point out that when asking for any change, it's best to come with a plan to be implemented and not ask them to come up with a plan. I do this all the time and it's a totally different ballgame, especially during IRROPS. While other complain, I walk up knowing which flights I want to get on. All they have to do is put the plan into action. Take that together with a smile and you're golden, unless the agent is having a bad day.
