I've always been for gun control, its one thing which I don't understand why it has become a partisan issue.
Can you explain your position for gun control?
I am no expert in the Constitution, but here is what I don't understand:
If the reason for the second amendment was so that the people can defend themselves against a possible tyrannical government, then why do conservatives push for control of automatic weapons? I mean, if the government has sophisticated automatic weapons, nuclear missils, armored vehicles, aircraft carriers, drones etc... and you have a little 9mm or a single shot rifle, you may as well have nothing at all.
Secondly, the Federal Government has control of the military, but the states today have control of the National Guard and state police, and the cities have control of the city police. Even if Washington were to G-D forbid become (more) corrupt, the individual states and cities would be able to defend themselves with their own police and national guard. For example, the NYPD would take orders from Bloomberg, not from Obama.
I think it's safe to say that the second amendment no longer applies in today's day and age. (The constitution is not the "Torah Shebiksav". It applied 200 years ago, but circumstances have changed.)
The only logical argument to make for the "right to bear arms", is so that a citizen can protect themselves, not against government, but against criminals, and it is a possible crime deterrent. (I.e. one can argue that if a teacher or principle in the CT school was armed, they could have shot the killer. Same for the theater massacre in Colorado.)
It would then make sense to say that the right to bear arms should be limited to non-automatic weapons, because a 9mm would be sufficient protection against a criminal. I also believe that owning a gun should require a license and a complete background check, and you should have to recertify your license every few years.
In my opinion, to argue for "total gun control" is idiotic. 9/11 was carried out without the use of a gun, and so was the Oklahoma City bombing. Also, remember this one fact: CRIMINALS WILL ALWAYS FIND A WAY TO GET HOLD OF A GUN, the same way drug dealers get hold of crystal meth, despite it being outlawed in the U.S.
Total gun control will leave criminals armed, and innocent civilians unarmed.
