From zero to Star Alliance gold in 1 trip
« on: August 11, 2017, 11:22:24 AM »
After collecting *A points for years on LH miles and more for years and not getting past silver status I decided I had to do something new.

So I found the EgyptAir Plus program which offered a seemingly simple solution to attaining gold status with just one trip.
EgyptAir offer a "family program". I have seen similar programs in BA, Iberia etc. But I think this is the first time I found this program actually credits family STATUS miles.

It was a bit of a gamble since the information in EgyptAir website is so bad and with so many typos, it's almost funny.

I was planning a family trip from Israel to South America this summer (couple + 2 kids), and decided to try it to see if it works.

So I sent EgyptAir all the information they require (passport copies and relation of passport holders to me) and after a few days received an email with membership numbers for all family members.

We flew with TK in economy which gave approx  15,000 miles each R/T, just enough to attain the gold status.

Sure enough, a day after I completed the trip I was credited with all the miles and a new (digital - they still need to mail it to me) star alliance gold card.

EgyptAir requires 30,000 miles for silver and an additional 30,000 for gold which is valid for 2 years.

Their redemption calculator seems reasonable though I have yet to try it.

Thought I'll share this information with you and would be glad to answer any questions.

The membership level of the family members remains on the Blue Level regardless the membership Level of the main member.

Correct.

My wife and the kids remain at blue, and the MAIN member gets ALL the miles (status and normal)

The rest of the members don't get any miles. Not earning and not status. Only the main member.

Does it also come with another wife?

It only specifies up to 5 family members.

If 2 wives only gave you 3 kids, she's useless and you should dump both and find a more fertile wife.

Maybe the lack of fertility was the reason wife #2 was called up to the majors.

What fare class were you in that you got 100% of the miles?
When does your Gold card expire?

Good stuff. Other blogs have mentioned this, glad to see it works!

EgyptAir Plus status is valid for 24 months from the qualification date. Once you’ve achieved Gold status, maintaining it is easier than the initial earn requirements; you only have to earn 30,000 Tier miles within 24 months after earning Gold status to maintain it for another two years.

2015: 116K bkd | 1.6M brnd | F: OZ,NH,AA,EK | J: UA,CA,TK,DL,TN,AF,VA | LIH,NRT,ROR,PEK,CNS,BOB,MEL,TLV & Pacific Hopper

Problem is that most fares will only earn 50%.

What is the timetable to earn Silver? Is it 30K within 24 months of the first flight? Or?

Award chart looks decent.

Question is how's YQ? Also any specific routing rules to be aware of? Redeemable online?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Here you can see the milage percentage earnings of all SA  partners. It's a little funny to navigate
I know I was booked on O on the return (75%). It doesn't seem that bad.

Gold is untill 07/19 (actually not sure why it's 23 months and not 24)

I'm actually not sure. The website is very vague about it to the extent that it seems that there is no expiry.

Not redeemable online. Only through call center.

I saw some reports online that YQ was quite low.
Will have to wait till I redeem the points to find out for real.

You don't have to actually redeem. How about call to get a quote in miles and YQ on some routes and carriers (such as LH, OS, LX, TK, LO, and MS on NYC-TLV route, TG, NH, SQ, OZ, on routes to Asia or Australia). Also, do they have any non-alliance partners?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Do you must send passport to open account? Can't u just do online?

Any other program on star alliance that offer even without the status.
I need to pool few members together not with same last name

I think TK allows some kind of pooling.
