United Mileage Plus - Free Checked Bags Q

If never had a United MileagePLus Explorer Card and know I wanted to get the free bags on a United flight, and already booked tickets, one ticket through United.com and one ticket through Chase Ultimate Rewards. Is there anyway to apply for the credit card NOW and get the free bags?

By the way I do have a Sapphire and a Freedom card, already.

Is this still True? Do you need to book with United card to get free bag? What if booked already and then apply for card? Will that work?

They still require you to book with the United card, otherwise, you wouldn't get it automatically, but, you can usually get it waived by the check in counter when you show them your card.
