Amex platinum
« on: February 20, 2009, 01:42:58 AM »
Does anyone know if the airport lounges check the amex plat card to see if its yours?
I was wondering if i borrowed someone's amex plat card, would i be able to get into the lounges?

Thanx

Rumor has it (I can't personally confirm) that even a cancelled AMEX Plat works for lounge access.

if you try using a cancelled amex plat for lounge access, is there any risk?
if they swipe it and let you in, will they then charge your (closed) account?

p.s. if instead of canceling, u just downgrade to a cheaper charge card, the account number will be the same and the card has more chance of still working

That's a good point indeed! I would really like to know if anyone has tried this. If not I'll try it myself. If they swipe the card and it authorizes properly, there should be no way for them to tell if it is actually a platinum account anymore.

There's no risk, the worst that could happen is they deny you entry because it's closed.
They definitely won't charge you for entry.

Of course they check ID and they check the ticket - you must be flying that day with that airline in your name with your card...AND they swipe it to confirm that it is active, but they DO NOT charge it.

I sure hope that answers all the questions.

The answer is YES, the 2 cards will have the same account number, the platinum card will be active and therefore when they swipe the card it will work.

When does one pay the annual fee for the card, and if you cancel the card before the year is up, do you only pay for the amount of time you had the card proportionately?

yes, you only pay pro-rated, the amount of time you had the card. i just did that recently with the platinum.

So how much did it cost you total? Why cant someone sign up and then cancel....now you get free access to the lounges and if you only had the card 1 month...you lose only 37.50?

Actually if you cancel with a month of the annual fee appearing on the statement they should refund the entire annual fee.

So then, why dont people do this? Anyone who is signing up for the lounge access should just sign up and then downgrade...no?

Levi said before. If you downgrade, the platinum card will no longer work after about a week.
When they try to swipe it it won't go through. Therefore there is no way around keeping the card. I just signed up for one and got approved today (even though AMEX just finished their financial review on me 3 days ago) and I am looking to split the card (additional cardholders) to lower the fee. Anyone interested plz see the other topic in "Credit Cards" called "Split AMEX Platinum".
