The airline falsely claiming that they were checked in last is wrong, but isn't a horror story. People are bumped every day, irregardless if it's a connection or point of departure. You're not stirring up any outrage like that.

What makes you say that is a false claim? I actually believe the airline on that claim. Problem is that it is the fault of the agents at MIA (and possibly internal procedures).
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Although I never flew Iberia, this would need to fixed ASAP. 9/10 times, by the time you arrive at the connection point, and you check in then, you'll be from the last ones who checkin. So that rather than bumping someone in their originating city, they will bump someone at their connection point.
A much bigger hassle usually.

That is exactly the point I made:

I hear that, but would they also stick up for the airlines if the focus was on involuntary bumping at a connection point when next flight out is more than 2-3 hours (or pick another number if you don't think that 2-3 hours will elicit the right amount of outrage).

I think all can agree that there's a huge difference between being bumped at point of origin to bumping at a connection point.

Being bumped for a long time at a connection point, can easily be much more than a major hassle (and is that much more exasperated when the individuals bumped include, or are exclusively minors, senior citizens, disabled persons, etc.) . This deserves the attention of regulators, especially when the airline is 100% at fault here for not checking them in for the connecting flight at their point of origin.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Which might be indicative that a title like "The Kids In Spain Are Left Off The Plane: A Nightmare With Iberia Airlines" might have been better received, as the play on words is obvious to many, is catchy, and wouldn't have them focusing on whether or not this is a "nightmare".

I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

AC says that the kid was not registered as a UM.

A friendly couple that had shared a cab with Timea to the airport offered to share a room with her. Airline staff attempted to add another person to the room as well, but the couple pushed back so Timea would be able to sleep in her own bed.

Lesson learned, wait for a slow news day for something like this.

(not that this is a sure thing, but at least that way you have a fighting chance...)

It just didn't resonate enough.
Had she been 15 instead of 17, maybe.

True. Although you can say that makes it even more important for it to be a slow news day.
Also, of course hindsight is 20-20, but I think more needed to be made of Iberia denying compensation on the basis of their age. i.e. they acknowledged that the age was an issue but instead of even trying to care of them appropriately they chose to take advantage of them and try to save a few bucks.

And IMHO the fact that no boarding passes for the second flight were issued at MIA shouldn't be let to rest. This should go to the DOT, congressmen, etc. until it catches on somewhere. This practice should be heavily penalized and forbidden, especially when passengers are more vulnerable (such as minors, seniors, and disabled people).

ETA: this rule should apply to domestic travel too (possibly with a scale depending on distance from O/D). The airlines prefer the hub and spoke model, they should bear the consequences.

This can't be a flat rule as sometimes people have 24 hour layovers and the second flight is not open for check in at the time of the first flight

So details need to be worked out. And obviously, if someone is booked with a 24 hour layover in the first place, stranding is not as much of an issue (and definitely less of the airline's fault).

Let's say you check in to a flight to China with a layover in HKG the time of check in can easily be more than 24 hours
