Planning a trip down under for July... any advice? Is it still a good idea to do the GOR or is it bad in 50-60 degree weather?

I read that already... but you went in December/January, my question is what differs if it's July?

If you're driving in a car, what difference at this point does it make?

It rains a lot in January too. Point being even if it's rainy you can still have a nice time driving. The views may be a bit nicer without the rain, but I wouldn't be too concerned.

Is there anything that I absolutely need to go see in Melbourne? Trying to plan a ~2 week trip to Sydney/Great Barrier Reef/ and possibly New Zealand if I can make it work

no, you can skip it if necessary, or 2 days on the GOR

You can't even do NZ properly in 2 weeks. Pick 1 country and do it for 2 weeks IMHO.

I hear that, but don't know how many times in my life I'll make it all the way out to Oceania.  I read your TR, do you really think 2 weeks would be necessary for Sydney and great barrier reef?

No, read my MEL trip notes.

No, that's just 1 week
but add in your choice of
GOR/Grampians
Kangaroo Island
Tasmania
Hamilton Island/Whitsundays
Ayers Rock

And you're way over 2 weeks.

I don't think you can accomplish much in NZ in 1 week.

I guess you're right.  Just saw some beautiful pictures of NZ and the bungee jumping looked amazing, wishful thinking I suppose.  I'm not finding any flights from NZ back to LAX around March anyways so I don't think I would've been able to make this itinerary swing.

P.S.- just wanted to say I feel honored that you personally responded to my post.  Truly appreciate all your knowledge as it helped me get a free honeymoon to Greece and Israel and hopefully this trip to Sydney. Please do another seminar in NYC sometime!!

If NZ interests you, why not get flights from NZ-AU-LAX? But I agree with Dan: don't even think about doing AU and NZ in the same trip unless you plan to spend 2 weeks in each. We were in AU for 2 weeks and felt that we barely scratched the surface. I could easily go back and spend another 2 weeks just in places we haven't visited yet! I aslo have a TR covering AU, and in particular the GOR done in one day if need be. I know Dan did 2 days, but I did it in one. While we didn't get to see the Gampians, it was still a nice experience.

Also keep in mind that if you're going in june, it is the winter there, so it gets dark early.  U can't cram as much in as people who went in the summer.
Also they're nuts about speed limits.  So drives take longer then they would in other countries

True on both accounts, but I didn't find their speed limits to be lower than other places if that's what you were referring to.

For those who have done GOR and Grampians overnight (or 2), any recommendations on where to stay?

Currently arrive in MEL at 8am on a Weds and depart for SYD on Sunday.

Thinking of hitting the ground running and heading straight to GOR.

Currently booked at PH MEL for the entire thing, but will likely just change to Fri and Sat.

I can't speak to spending the night in/near the Gampians, but I think the idea of driving the GOR on Wed(/Thu) is the only way to go. Fri you can explore the city itself, like the highest observation deck in the southern hemisphere (88th floor, but really 89th by US counting) and the Queen Victoria Market.

You'd rather stay at the PH for shabbos as opposed to in/near the community?
