For me, it's not so much about somewhat obtrusive ads that bothers me but the technology behind the ads that follow me around the internet. Similar to the pixels from FB and other social networking sites, they basically log every website you visit even if you're not on their website. That's why I use Privacy Badger or Ghostery. I try to find other ways to support sites I like through click throughs, Patreon etc.
