Because it wasn't nearly as bad as the media hyped it to be?
That's the sad part. Just give it to us straight.

Floridians run because we recognize the danger of a storm, no storm is ever underwhelming. We are thankful it missed us, it could have taken a last minute turn and destroyed south florida c'v

I mean the hype of 185 mph winds and larger than andrew scared me, my apartment roof sucks and we couldnt even find the shutters for my bedroom window

But, few people in south florida would die from a direct hit of a 185 mph storm, if you have a sturdy house and not in a flood prone area etc you'd be ok though its VERY VERY SCARY. I still remember the sound of the howling winds andrew made.

I chose not to go back mostly because itsmisrable to be stuck indoor for a day or 2 then no power for a few more days as the city is still closed.

What exactly do you think was distorted? To the contrary, be grateful and happy we in southeast Florida were largely spared.
To quote Bryan Norcross:
Irma demonstrated the very difficult challenge we have communicating forecasts for potentially devastating events like Irma. The storm tracked well within the cone, and well within the errors intrinsic in forecasting where small weather features – like the eye of a hurricane – are going to go. When the possible tracks are near a coastline, like in this case, the variety of possible outcomes that would result from a slight variation in the timing or exact track of the eye range from worst case devastation to damaging but survivable.

When the National Hurricane Center is alerting people in harm’s way, the only reasonable course is to be sure people know what will happen if the storm takes the worst-case track within the known unforecastable range of possibilities. It's common sense.

As inconvenient as it is, when a giant storm presents a life-threatening risk to vulnerable coastal sections, people will always be warned about the worst reasonable case and an evacuation trauma will be required. It’s everybody’s responsibility to make that as efficient and painless as possible. It's part of living along the coast.

They don't use reason. They give the worse case scenario, period.

Because otherwise no one would listen.

Mandatory evacuation for someone on collins in a 20 story building makes no sense but if collins was under water and there was an emergency, you are screwed.

Actually Rabbi Marlow got an amazing answer in the Igros.

Fact is, Irma could have killed hundreds cv with a direct hit, from flooding

...but parts of Florida it was a direct hit. All I am saying is give it to us straight. If next month they say the same thing I can guarantee you a lot less will evacuate.

Flooding caould cause structural damage. Also, 150 mph winds can make real issues for a 20 story building.

I watched the weather channel for hours. They hyped this one good especially when it was losing steam.

People in the know just follow the NHC reports. And as said above they show the possible paths and have been accurate...

Much less people will evacuate if this happens again, but probably not for good reason.

If it gets bad, then you are on your own, broken bones, heart attack, drowning, no one is coming to help and 911 will tell you too bad...

We left... Initially we we're gonna stay, but my 6 year old was super scared and nervous... Then we ended in an evacuation zone...

Our building never lost power.

We plan on driving back from TN tomorrow afternoon
