JAL Short Check in Narita?

Hi,
I booked a flight to Singapore with a dans deals tweet a few months ago with a layover in Narita Tokyo Japan.
Turns out Singapore has Zika so we can't go there, and cheapoair refuses to cancel the flight since its non refundable.

INSTEAD I plan on stopping in Tokyo and staying there. (already got another flight back from Tokyo.)

My question is:
Does anyone know if I can grab my luggage at Narita before it goes through to Singapore?
Does Tokyo have the same rule as in JFK where you have to pick up the bag before you go to your connection?

I called JAL and they said we have to ask at the airport when we check the bag, but I don't want to wait until the last minute and get messed over.

Any answers would be helpful.

first of all you cant take the return flight if you skip the leg to Singapore.
Second of all it will get checked all the way through
Lastly, bring carry-ons and you can do this! (assuming you dont need the return)

Like I said, I already booked separate tickets for the return. I know I won't be able to use the others from this reservation.
Do you know this for a fact or you're saying that because of in general?

IIRC NRT has a transfer area way before immigration and customs. For me it was right off the plane. There was a sign for connecting flights that would take you back to departure right there.

In Japan, International Connections don't have you exit or clear immigration.

In theory, this could be fine if you tell the JAL folks at check in to check your bag only to Narita...but it will help if your original layover is long.

I checked my 2 bags straight to JFK from HKG
even though I had a 22 hour stopover

I Confirmed at NRT when Departing the next day my luggage was joining me home
and even added another Bag when I checked in at NRT
BH all went well...
