Let's look at logic.  If @Yehuda57 were wrong, this would be a cut and dry/open-shut case, no confusion....but there IS confusion.  Why? I believe @Yehuda57 IS correct.  'This' is hands-down now, this week.  That means that 'next' is the following one.  When you say 'this week' versus 'next week' it is easier to understand, but when you are only saying 'next week' people get confused.  This generation has become so lax we run into problems.  I-me, their-there-they're, to-too, who-whom, was-were, etc.

except the Wednesday of the current week has already passed since the question was posed on Thursday. so, while i agree that we would be referring to 9/20, this particular example is not "case closed"

I don't understand why this is so complicated.

Yes, there are 4 days a week where "this Wed." and "next Wed." mean the same thing.
So there are other places where "next" is used differently? welcome to English.

Why is it when we are talking about days of the week it is the second one but with years it is the NEXT one?

If I say on 12/31/17 see you next year that means 2018 not 2019!!!
