Why is it when we are talking about days of the week it is the second one but with years it is the NEXT one?

If I say on 12/31/17 see you next year that means 2018 not 2019!!!  >:( >:( >:(
Okay. now that we know which of the 2 you are disagreeing about it seems that most here are considering "next Wed" to mean next week Wed and are considering each week separately. Hence the difference between which week you are in. I think this is the way most people speak. This would also be a difference between days and this case.

Do you or anyone else think that "next Friday" means tomorrow?

I'm an optimist; but only because life isn't going to give me any other good choices.

I gave you an example of where "next" changes based on context, right?

With days, the differing context is that we use "this Wednesday" as well as "next Wednesday". Based on the fact that THIS Wednesday is actually NEXT week, that changes things.

It's quite simple.

Then you started with the "this" and "the".

What happened to 1+1=3? We need him back because he would agree with you.  :)

No, that's THIS Friday, meaning NEXT Friday is next week.
On Shabbos, this Friday will mean next week's Friday, meaning next Friday is the week after.

What you are trying to do is pretend "next" is time based. I am not buying what you are selling.

I got it!  I have the answer, but I just lost my entire logical, thought-out-with-examples post.  >:( >:(

Bottom line:  It is a relative, semantic issue based on how one defines 'this' at the moment he is speaking!  Take it from there or wait until I get back and have the koiach to rewrite everything....

ETA I am reading above.  You are starting to be on the right track.

Let me try to explain this so even a 5th grader can understand. I am even going to use your "this" even if you only added that once you were caught.  :)

Payment is not due this Thursday but next Thursday.

When is payment due?

One little problem. "THIS" was never part of OP question.  ;)

RELATIVE to how one defines 'this'.  If it is today, then in one week.  If it is in one week, then next is in two weeks.  It theoretically should be in two weeks, but this generation....

Insignificant.  'Next' is intrinsically TIME RELATED to 'this'.

Like JJ said, it's not about the meaning of the word "next" which you are so hung up on, it's about context and usage.

Let me try to explain this so even a 5th grader can understand. I am even going to use your "this" even if you only added that once you were caught.  :)

When is payment due?

Now, let's say I tell you on Friday:
Payment is not due this Thursday but next Thursday.

When is payment due?
1 - You can't just make up meanings based on context.
2 - Have no idea and would ask you for a date not day.

If they are placed incorrectly to start then they should be moved.

"The next" and "next" are different.

The next Wednesday is the the very next Wednesday we will have, which is Sep 20. "Next" Wednesday is the Wednesday after this Wednesday, which is Sep 27.

IOW, This Wednesday, and the next Wednesday are the same day - Sep 20.
Next Wednesday is Sep 27.
See above, THE next Wednesday is not next Wednesday
No, that's THIS Friday, meaning NEXT Friday is next week.
On Shabbos, this Friday will mean next week's Friday, meaning next Friday is the week after.

You are assuming 'next' must always follow 'this'. I ( as well as most people) disagree.

Usually, If I say next Wednesday I mean the next day that it is Wednesday. It is only when it is almost Wednesday that it is assumed that you would say this Wednesday for the upcoming Wednesday and that next Wednesday must mean the following week.

Those of you that say it means next week Wednesday, I am not sure I  totally agree. On Shabbos if you say next Sunday?? next Monday??

1 - You can't just make up meanings based on context.
If I say "this table", that means "this" is referring to a table. Does that mean that the definition of the word "this" is "a table"? If so, how is it possible that when I say "this chair", "this" is referring to a chair? When did the table magically turn into a chair?
Who do you think you are fooling? You think you are going to pull a quick one on your Creator? Good luck with that.
