+1, very fun game and rewarding.  If not for DDF I would have never known about any of this.  I'm about $2k in spending away from my companion pass (and will have over 110k SWA miles) and looking forward to the award tickets that my gf and I will have in 2012 and 2013 with SWA.

companion pass is valid for the year you got it in (ie 2012) or one year from when you get it?

companion pass is valid for the year you got it in (ie 2012) or one year from when you get it?

From the Companion Pass Rules and Regulations:

Companion Pass qualification will be based on a calendar year.  A Companion Pass Member will maintain his/her Companion Pass for the remainder of the calendar year in which status is earned, and the entire calendar year immediately following.  To continue their Companion Pass privileges, Members must re-qualify each year.  (For example, a Member who earns a Companion Pass on July 15, 2011 will maintain the Companion Pass for the remainder of 2011 and all of 2012.  Beginning January 1, 2012, the Member must complete 100 qualifying one-way flights or accrue 110,000 Qualifying Points by December 31, 2012, and upon doing so, the Companion Pass will be extended to December 31, 2013.)

I have just begun to look into this today so I may be a little behind.

Basically I can sign up for a chase southwest cred card today and get the current promotion offering 25,000 points. Then I can contact them and appeal for them to match a previous offer allocating me another 25,000 points for a total of 50,000?  Am I comprehending this correctly?

Also, I will have to pay what looks to be $65 to start this up.  If I were to decide that I don't want to keep this card when my next annual fee of $65 is due a year from now can I cancel with no problem or penalties?

Thanks everyone!

Yup! You basically got it. Just the $65 fee is not due at the beginning but rather the end of your first year. You can cancel the card or ask for a retention bonus before you pay that fee. You should definitely look into the 3 browser method before opening just one chase card. Welcome to ddf and Good luck!

Great!  I'm not sure what you mean by the "three browser method". I currently have a chase freedom card.

Unless they changed it recently, the southwest card does not have the first year free so you would have to pay the $69 on either the first or second billing statement.

Keep it for what? I think it has some anniversary miles (depending on the offer you signed up thorough), but I don't know if they justify the annual fee. Having the CC also allows you to redeem SW points for GCs.

They sometimes offer a 20% discount on the GCs, effectively 1.25cpp

+1.  For my personal and biz cards (opened in November and April), the $69 fee was charged at the end of my first billing cycle.
