Do you loose point when closing the card or are the point a seperate program?

I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

Thanks! Just wanted to make sure. Really never familiarized myself with Southwest program.

Trying to decide between a 2nd Southwest card and a British Airways card (Chase will only allow one right now).  Both have the 50k promo - the SW will get me up to 110k for the year to earn the companion pass, but I don't have any travel plans for 2014.  Is there a way to monetize the companion pass if I sell the miles or give them to family members, or is the companion pass only valuable if I plan to use the miles and free flights myself?  Thanks.

You can book other people with your SW miles very easily. IMO, if you don't have any travel plans, get the SW and have a companion pass in the case you do need to travel.

FYI You will not lose the points, but you will lose the ability to redeem them for GCs if you don't have a SW card open.

you cannot use your companion pass unless you fly as well,
you must designate one person at a time as your companion
you can only change the person 3 times a calendar year,

so in order to sell your companion pass you must fly and the person paying for it must have been made companion earlier and be flying with you, and the amounts of times you can do this are very limited

so the answer to your question about monetizing the companion pass is, not really!

Do you have to earn all the points to qualify for a companion pass by December? Or does it still pay to wait until January?

All within a calendar year. If you have travel plans for this year, it may be worth it.

So, I guess I have to spend it all by December. Too bad.
Did that change recently?
I thought I remember reading to wait until January so you'd have to pass for longer.

I believe that was in reference to waiting to do the spending/bonuses posting until the next year.

Why would it be worth it to wait unless you were allowed to earn the 110K not just within a calendar year?

If you got your first card at the end of 2013, it would be worth it to wait to complete the spend until 2014 so that the bonus counts towards the 2014 CP.
For the 2nd card, it obviously wouldn't make sense to wait.

Somebody asked this 5-6 pages up thread, but I'm going to ask again.

Can I somehow push of the completion of the 2k spending into January to gain an extra year of CP?

Here is my situation. I signed up for two SW cards (one bus and 1 personal). I signed up on August 13. I called chase and they said I had 103 days to complete spend. Thought it was 90 days, but rep confirmed 103 days. This would make the last day that I can spend November 24. Can I spend 1,999 before nov 24, and the last dollar on the 24. I would then call up and change the close date to the 20th. That would make it that it wont post before Dec 20.

How many days past the close date to the SW points usually take to post?
