In some cases where the bride or groom's Father is soooper Chassidish they don't even see each other then (yep, I had to hang around in one room and my Kallah in another... Oh BTW my in-laws are divorced 🤦‍♂️...)

Seems they are having a Chuppa at The Ballroom at Eagle Ridge Golf Club. FWIW :P

And the real wedding isn't for another month.

That's fine but that's not what people said above.
Ah yes, I was mistakenly correlating them. I got a marriage license before, but filed the marriage certificate after the chasuna.

The marriage license requires both parties to be present at the clerk.

Interesting. Unique to NJ?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

I think it has to be the same witness for both.

Some minutes ago, I was walking through Lakewood's municipal building's parking lot when a man in a yarmulke approached me
and asked (after first asking if I spoke English)
I love this part of the story. Lakewood is getting a rap like Williamsburg

Is it really doxing just someone who was in a story? This isn't some online anonymous personality or even username.

Can stories about real people not be shared on DDF?

I used the term doxing more tongue in cheek. But for real, we have a name and picture of a woman on a site seen by thousands with the premise being that she isn't Jewish. I don't know her, maybe she'd find it hilarious, maybe she'd be really offended, especially if she's dealt with this issue before. The story doesn't lose anything without a name, so on the chance that it's the latter, why not remove it?

I got legally married before my chasuna. I think that's standard in my circles.

I've heard of it mostly done for immigration purposes. I personally am opposed to being legally married altogether, unless there's a reason (such as immigration), especially since Obergefell v. Hodges.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

I don't think anyone takes the not Jewish part seriously, especially based on the story :P

But CMIIW, happy to remove it.

Some minutes ago, I was walking through Lakewood's municipal building's parking lot when a man in a yarmulke approached me
and asked (after first asking if I spoke English) if I could be the witness for his marriage, which he hadn't realized he needed*.
I agreed before realizing I didn't know if the woman in question was Jewish (or if he was, but most non-Jews wouldn't be wearing
a yarmulke). His fiancée's name turned out to be Martinez. While trying to figure out how to tell him I would need to ask
a rabbi whether I could do this, he asked whether I had any ID on me. Thankfully, I did not, and that was that.
(Trying to persuade him not to intermarry was not something I was prepared to undertake.)

*https://findajp.com/faqs/witnesses-marriages-state/ lists New Jersey's witness
requirement as "One witness over the age of 18 who knows both applicants."

And if both parties are Jewish, why would you witness (assuming you are כשר לעדות) let a goy witness so there's no שאלה of validity.

Inheritance taxes.

Those are optional taxes. Plenty of planning techniques to avoid them.

If you would say Social Security benefits that would be more of an argument, but then I would say to only get legally married later in life.
