The funny/strange/interesting story that happened to you thread...
« on: September 27, 2017, 11:45:10 AM »
I will start:

Uman, Ukraine

An adorable toddler comes over to me at the park, grabs my hand, stares deep into my soul for like 3 minutes (by now I'm done being confused and am simply creeped out) then runs back to her mother and says; OK, I'm done pooping!

Costco in Lakewood, NJ
Was walking down an aisle chatting on my bluetooth when some octogenarian couple passed me. The lady asked me "does that really work well? I've been asking my husband to get one for a long time." ::)

Took my son to a non-Jewish pediatrician last Friday. She was trying to drum up a conversation, so she started asking us some questions on Judaism. First question, "So who blows out the candles?"

I was like, "huh?"

She explains, "The Shabbos candles. Who blows out the Shabbos candles?"

You have to blow them out within 18 minutes of Shkiya so it isn’t chillul Shabbos….

I just remembered a personal story that happened more than 15 years ago.

When I was a bochur, I had a practice I often did whenever I would walk 13th Avenue in Boro Park. I always had some quarters with me, and whenever I would spot a meter maid, I would walk in front of them and put quarters into empty meters. (Yes, the bochurim in those days!) More than once, I drew their ire, but there was not much they could do.

Once, I saw an empty meter and proceeded to put in a quarter as the meter maid was approaching. The cop got really upset, and she proceeded to scan the registration and give a ticket. I waited until the cop left and checked the ticket, and saw that the cop wrote "Put in money after car was scanned" - a blatant falsehood. (Legally, you are not allowed to feed a meter, and you are obligated to move your car after the 2-hour allotment, so the cop could've given a ticket anyways for that. But this cop decided to lie instead.)

I pulled out a notepad from my pocket and left a note: "I am a witness that there was money in the meter when the officer scanned the car." I also wrote my name and phone number, and slipped the note in alongside the ticket.

Weeks later, I got a phone call. "I brought your note to court and the judge dismissed the ticket," the caller said. Who was the caller? Pinny Ringel, then a co-owner of Hi-Tech 2000, and now a (seemingly losing) candidate for Boro Park District Leader.

@ChaimMoskowitz can you explain why the pediatrician would assume the candles are blown out?  ;)

Some minutes ago, I was walking through Lakewood's municipal building's parking lot when a man in a yarmulke approached me
and asked (after first asking if I spoke English) if I could be the witness for his marriage, which he hadn't realized he needed*.
I agreed before realizing I didn't know if the woman in question was Jewish (or if he was, but most non-Jews wouldn't be wearing
a yarmulke). His fiancée's name turned out to be Martinez. While trying to figure out how to tell him I would need to ask
a rabbi whether I could do this, he asked whether I had any ID on me. Thankfully, I did not, and that was that.
(Trying to persuade him not to intermarry was not something I was prepared to undertake.)

*https://findajp.com/faqs/witnesses-marriages-state/ lists New Jersey's witness
requirement as "One witness over the age of 18 who knows both applicants."

Do you want to play a board game, digitally or in Lakewood NJ? PM me. (Can be asynchronous, i.e. take turns whenever)

And the real wedding isn't for another month.

And the real wedding isn't for another month.

Meanwhile on Imamother forum in the "Interesting story that happened to you" thread:

"My fiance and I needed to get married legally before our actual wedding for technical reasons I'd rather not get into (A rov advised us to do this, before you jump on me with your halachic questions). We didn't realize it before we went to the courthouse, but we needed witnesses. My fiance, who like me is an obviously frum Jew, went over to another frum looking Jew in the parking lot and asked if he could be a witness. The guy started getting all uncomfortable and started stammering about stuff I couldn't understand, pretty random if you ask me. Then my fiance asked if he had ID and his eyes lit up and he said no. Who doesn't carry ID on them? It was clearly an excuse not to be a witness. It was all so weirdly random."
