Tribe Tech Review
« on: September 27, 2017, 04:22:10 PM »
I have a blog where I review home technology products from the lens of a shomer Shabbos consumer.  I am happy to respond to comments or suggestions in this forum where we can share concerns and workarounds.  In a recent article I reviewed the Wink Hub and Leviton switches and provided a 30% coupon code by entering "tribe" at the official Leviton store.  I discussed solutions for programming lights for Yom Tov and potential halachic problems with Winks Homesitter service.  I plan on writing about issues and potential solutions regarding smart locks in an upcoming article so feel free to share your experiences and ideas on this thread.

With smart locks logging every open and close, can you use the mechanical component on Shabbos?  Is there a way to bypass this?

I believe ALL Smart Locks may have issues on Shabbos.  This is even if you are using them mechanically (no obvious electronics used) which is not obvious.  If you disagree, I would love to hear from you.

How about the ones that fit over your existing lock?

is that really the case that none of the smart locks have a manual override?

I see plenty of options on amazon for a key insert

Sounds like you are referring to the August lock.  They too send a log even when using the mechanical component.  Basically, any time you open or close the lock (and it does not matter how you do it) it send a log.  Maybe this is permissible for safety, but you should certainly ask if you believe it is a concern.  I am writing on this topic in the Jewish Link of Bergen County this week.  It will also be on my blog this Friday

The manual override is to remove the battery or sever the connection.  Any other use of the lock, even with a manual key, will send a log.  There is no light or beep but check your log and you will see every activity.

Anyone have a good idea on how to turn on and off a gas fireplace on shabbos?  I have a possible solution I am exploring but looking if others have come up with creative ways of doing this?  The problem is that fireplace switches are low voltage and most if not all smart switches require 120 Volts.

First time I am seeing them. Not sure I like what I see as there is no flood light or Echo compatibility. There is a massive battle going on for control of your front door with doorbells and security.  Ring, August and Nest are just a few of the big competitors.   I am not ready to pick a winner.  From a Shabbos perspective, motion sensing might be an issue on these so I will look into it and write about it as time permits.

So I have a very simple solution to automate your gas fireplace for Shabbos.  It is a slice of gan eden to have this on a cold Friday night. I write about it at my latest column at tribetechreview.wordpress.com.  Please let me know if you have any questions or comments - Dov

My latest column highlights the fact that keeping an Echo or Google Home on in your home on Shabbos is problematic.  I have not found a rav that would permit it on in your home.  However, if it is in someone else's home and you are visiting in may not be an issue.  see tribetehreview.wordpress.com
