How old does your credit history need to be for them to stop using that as an excuse?
I do not think there is a set time that they stop. Can only wait.

Don't worry. They told me about too many cards in the last 2 years also. Before May they were approving me for cards with no issue with an even shorter credit history.  ::)

They have been tougher in general , and maybe tougher on most people for UR cards , but there are reports here otherwise .
They've been tougher on UR cards .
UR.

I've had a friend denied for slate on the same reason, no one was willing to budge.

I was denied for the csp for too many cards in the last two years. What I did was I opened a chase business account waited a couple weeks and then successfully open a biz ink+ through my biz banker. :-)

What most people probably meant by UR (at least this is what I meant) is a Chase branded card. Meaning, Slate, Freedom, Ink, and SP as opposed to cards that are connected to airlines/hotel chains.

I don't think slate even earns points.

Doesn't seem to have anything to do with points. More of a chase-branded vs. not chase-branded.

It really applies to the Chase house brand personal products.  Freedom, CSP, Slate.  It has not applied to the co-branded or business line products.

Of course, they can always use the "too many cards opened" as a denial on any account.  Just like an issuer using "pyramiding debts", "too much available credit", "too many INQ's", "not enough experience at current credit limits" etc etc.

By law, they have to give you the reason for a denial, so they use those nice arbitrary ones.

Why do you suppose the change on these & these only ?

They think the economy is going to dump or they have to limit their portfolio/exposure for govt regulations, something like that.

They have contracts with the co-brands, so they cannot be as stingy.  Co-branding is obviously extremely competitive right now.  Lots of CC companies have extended the co-brand customers large LOC's, or pre-purchased massive amounts of miles.  I think I read something once that Citi had purchased a billion dollars of AA miles?

And the biz cards are a whole different ball game.  They go under the business lending category, aren't subject to the CARD Act etc.

ETA: For example: http://aviationblog.dallasnews.com/2013/05/citibank-tells-american-airlines-to-love-me-or-leave-me.html/

Excerpts from link article:

"Citibank advanced $1 billion to American in September 2009 to pre-purchase miles in the AAdvantage frequent-flier program. The obligation is secured by takeoff and landing rights at airports, airport facilities, route authorities and other assets."

"Barclays in 2008 had pre-purchased $200 million in miles in US Airways’ Dividend Miles program. US Airways pays interest on the funds. US Airways is scheduled to begin reducing that balance in January 2014 over a period of up to two years, according to US Airways’ 2012 10-K filing."

I called the automated line and it
says we will notify you in writing in 30 days
does that mean I was declined?
I never got the 30 days before I either got the 2 weeks or 7-10 days

Did they ever shut one of your ultimate rewards cards for selling?
I got the 30 days and they said it wasn't even a credit check because they or one of their affiliates had a bad experience with me.

Tried a few times and kept getting that.
I tried to explain to them that my experience with chase was only positive and I thought it was mutual, if they can please elaborate on what experience they are referring to. They weren't allowed to disclose that info...
