According to a new law that was passed, they shouldn't. But as a matter of fact, they still do.
I thought that was only <21?

Nope:

Quote from: http://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/press/bcreg/20110318b.htm
In order to protect consumers from incurring unaffordable levels of credit card debt, the Credit Card Act requires that, before opening a new credit card account or increasing the credit limit on an existing account, card issuers consider a consumer's ability to make the required payments on the account. Consistent with the act, the Board's rule addresses practices that can result in extensions of credit to consumers who lack the ability to pay. Specifically, the rule states that credit card applications generally cannot request a consumer's "household income" because that term is too vague to allow issuers to properly evaluate the consumer's ability to pay. Instead, issuers must consider the consumer's individual income or salary.

All in a nights work-
2 for 2 on a 2BM for the wife thru recon for SP and 70k marriott. Would have been a 3BM but it got messed up. Transferred over credit from freedom card for SP and from CO ( Down to 500 dollars) for Marriott.
2 for 2 on 2 that i have reference numbers for on my 3BM. Canceled BA card for United pretty easily. Then on freedom card She gave me a problem because I had too many open accounts And they didn't even do a credit pull to evaluate my application so she had to pull it then (an extra pull but whatever) and she gave me a whole shpiel about too many cards.... and told me i had to close my marriott card. Which i was more than happy to do. 2 new cards.
Life isn't about checking the boxes. Nobody cares.

My story - I applied for Chase Freedom card and got a denial (too many request for credit or opened account with us). My last application with Chase was in June (Sapphire Preferred) and BA Visa (in April). I also got a SPG card in August. So, my number on inquires is 3 in last 6 months. Unfortunately, I made a big mistake last month when I closed my CO card (due to annual fee) with CL of $11K. Now, I know that I should keep that card since it would be a good bargain for closing/opening a card.

Anyway, I called today and rep told me that I opened BA visa in April and Sapphire in June, so I have many cards with them. Fine, I said, I offer to shift CL between BA Visa (I have $17K limit) and Freedom card. She told me that if I want Freedom card to be approved I must close either BA Visa or Sapphire. This is a tough choice for me, so I thanked her and said I'll think and call back.

What do you guys suggest? Should I close BA Visa (7 month old card) or play this game again with new rep (probably he will offer just shifting CL)? I do have 3 cards with Chase (had 4 before closing CO card), so they could approve for 4th card. Does Freedom card worth such sacrifice? I know that new Explorer card comes next year (with big sign up bonus) and I don't want to miss it either.

Unfortunately, I closed CO card about 40 days ago.

I guess I would call again (hope to get a new rep) and if he offers again the same (close an old card), I'll close BA Visa.

Just wanted to share my first experience with Chase Reconsideration.
Two weeks ago I did a 3BM for the SW, CO and Sapphire Pref. I checked my credit score a couple days later and saw only one hard pull recorded (Exp.)
Last week I got three letters from Chase in the mail saying I was denied fore all 3 cc. For the SW and CO they wrote I had too many CC accounts/too many inquiries and about my Sapphire application they wrote that I was denied because I already have one. (Which I do)
In the past, this would be where I stop and give up, but because I read about reconsideration, here on DDF, I decided to give it a try. First I called about the CO. The rep. was very helpful and friendly and approved me right away. She didn't ask me any questions. Than I called about the SW and got a rude rep. on the line who simply told me there was nothing he could do. I had too many cards (1 Sapphire Pref.) with Chase and no Credit history. I very friendly explained that was impossible since I have a Chase car loan which is almost paid off. (Couple months left) he got very quiet, apologized and told me he misunderstood me and thought that I was trying to get a higher credit line. I told him that I just wanted the card for the sign-up bonus and that I didn't care how high of a credit line he could give me. He replied that he could not give me a $5000 CL but that he would try for a $2000 CL. A few min later he came back to me and told me he approved me for the SW with a $10K CL (??!!) Whatever...
Right after that I called about my Sapphire Pref. application. The rep. told me that I was denied since I already have one. I explained to him that I wanted another one for the 50K bonus UR. He came back to me and said he was only able to approve me for another one if I would close down my first one. He helped me transfer all my points, closed down my first one and approved me for a new Sapphire Pref.
I was very surprised that I was able to turn three denials into three approvals and very happy to be part of this forum.
A big thanks to everyone!!!

I thinks they should rename the Chase Reconsideration to lottery slogan; 'Hey, you never know!'

F.C. fee, my accountant told me it easier for accounting purposes, your card is soo much

Better than Amex , prettier colors and a POX on Amexs house were what we should say to recon.

You blew me away. I just tell them I have 2 month old sapphire card  that I got 50K and
I want a new one with another 50k bonus , thank you very much!

Got my 2BM results. I was approved for Freedom with an $8500 CL, but got a rejection letter for the "CHASE SAPPHIRE Visa Signature credit card". (Is that the same thing as Sapphire Preffered? Cuz that's what I applied for.)

Rejection was due to "too many requests for credit or opened accounts with us".

I have a BP (CL $6K) for 2 years and a CO (CL $20K) for 11 months, and of course the Freedom from the same time as this app, for a total CL of $34500. I had planned on closing the CO anyway to avoid the fee.

When calling recon in this scenario, do I simply request straight out that I would like to close the CO, so please move the CL over in order to approve the SP app? Or will I likely need to give them reasons why I need both this and the SP at the same time.

Consider asking to move over some credit from the CO's $20k CL instead of offering to close it outright.

You'll only need a reason for getting both cards if they ask, they might or might not.

The second call was successful - the same questions, but the rep approved for the card with $5K limit.

Any cause for worry that the rejection letter referenced the CHASE SAPPHIRE Visa Signature credit card instead of the Sapphire Preferred?
