How difficult is it to "know about guns" these days? (I was gonna say "how difficult is it for anyone who knows how to read..." but these days with videos of everything on youtube you don't even need that.)

I don't know why everyone is assuming he needed military training for this. It's not like he hit a single head shot from 1000 yards. how difficult is it for anyone with the bare minimum amount of firearm control to fire into a crowd of 20,000 people?

I don’t think it was necessarily difficult to shoot but it looks like the shooting and set up was carried out like someone with training.
He planned ahead for everything.

Exactly. How would he know that from 32 floors it would be effective?  He had some - at a minimum - basic knowledge.

3) No video footage from the hotel in the most surveilled city in the world?
They'll get there eventually. They're currently up to 2011 ::)

He had the knowledge to rig the guns to become automatic.
He had the foresight to bring many guns to overcome gun failure, overheating, or jamming.
He’s also a guy that wasn’t presumably a gun nut.

The first two are basic for anyone who's been handling guns for any amount of time.  The bump stock is super easy to install.  A friend has one.
What makes you presume the third?

you guys are way overthinking this.

Obviously he had at least some gun knowledge but saying he needed to have had some kind of training to pull this off is a bit of a stretch.

He could've pretty much planned this whole thing in literally 10 minutes.

How's this for a scenario? He's on one of his previous trips to Vegas, (we know he was an avid gambler who practically lived in the casinos,) up there in one of these rooms overlooking the fairgrounds,  maybe even in the very same room. maybe there's even an event going on at the time, and he suddenly decides, "you know what, I'm gonna shoot the crap out of this place one day."
ok google, what's the effective range of an AR15? I'm good on that front, check.
What upcoming events are there at Las Vegas village? Oh there's a country music festival? check.
How can I convert an AR15 to full auto? Oh I can get a bump stock legally? check. (he probably knew/had these already)

And there you go, he's pretty much done. Of course there's the small logistical details to work out, but the general idea is here.

This doesn't mean he didn't have any training etc, I'm just saying it wasn't necessary.

ETA: Edited to clarify that the hypothetical scenario presented occurred on a previous visit, not right then.

All im saying is he had to have some idea of how guns work. I personally dont. If I were to have to guess, I dont think the 32 floor would be a good floor for this - too high. Now ive learnt i am wrong.

Wasn't saying anything about him planning this out.

I thought it was clear in my post that this planning happened (in the theoretical scenario) on a previous trip to Vegas, not on the spot. Apparently not.

Question is only for how long he planned this. He had no intention of leaving that room alive.

1. It could've just been dumb luck.
2. 30 seconds on google will tell you it's effective at that range.

You are right. He must have had military training to have been able to drive to Vegas.

..and another 30 seconds and .223 would not be the caliber of choice.
