Can I just swap out a normal shower head to a rain shower or is it more complicated than that?
Yes, just swap it.
I don't think so. I think you need to change first the shower arm to a rain shower arm, the one that has the thread end totally facing downwards, and has a longer pipe coming out, with the regular angled  shower arm it will still pour like a regular shower with an inclined spray, no matter which shower head you attach.

I would say most shower spouts are standard.
That being said most of the attachments that go on to that spout can be moved up down and adjusted that way you get a perfect angle.

Correct that most heads are adjustable, but still you need the longer shower arm pipe , otherwise you'll need to stand too close to the wall since it's spraying downwards and not angled. The rain shower arms comes longer therefor.

Maybe he can post a pic of what his shower arm looks like, I replaced my shower head to a rain one long ago and it was fine, I left the longer arm that it came with in the box.
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

I'm sure this is a very common problem - slow draining shower. I've been snaking it about once a year and that usually speeds it up. The last few times that I snaked it, it sped up but it's not as fast as it used to be. Should I invest in a longer snake or just pour something down the drain after I use my 25 foot snake?

like you mentioned your drain is definitely clogged.
You can try the Drano and all those chemicals see if it works.
25 ft would really be enough, strange that it's still clogged.
they don't usually go deeper than that but you can always go deeper than that if you feel comfortable and hope your snake will come out. 😌

Maybe try this. Unscrew the lever overflow faceplate, pull out the rod with the attached stopper and place the stopper higher on the rod with the 2 nuts. Very often the stopper is placed too low initially, leaving just a small opening for the water to drain.
This applies only for a bathtub drain...

1953. The only drain in the house that's slow is the bathtub.

I actually snake it through the overflow pipe. It's so hard to get the snake through the drain without going through the overflow first. The drain works the same (or worse) when the overflow pipe is unscrewed.

interesting. then a few feet should be more than enough. what xomes to mind:
1) by any chance did you change your shower head recently?
2) the drain line from the shower is most likely cast iron and may have rusted and corroded, impeding water flow. in that case you need to replace those few feet.

When you first take a shower does it drain ok? After 5-10 minutes does it slow down? This will give you some indication where the clog is.

1) No, maybe two years ago. Why would that matter?
2) I'll try snaking one more time and chemicals and if those plus any ideas CV has don't work I'll ask a plumber...

It doesn't get worse by the second shower, the drain issue is pretty immediate.

If there's more water coming out of the shower head you need a faster drain to accommodate. The difference in shower heads can be a much as 2 gallons a minute.
