It is unlikely to be the AC in the summer since it wouldn't dry out. Sounds like a drain which is not vented and therefore didn't have water in the trap.
Correct it wouldn't be the AC drain in the summer.
I just found a new supply of forks!

Sink traps can give off a nasty smell when stuff builds up especially in the kitchen. Maybe try a cup of bleach in each one?

That's true, but wouldn't it smell when I put my head there to smell it? It only smells randomly a few times throughout the day and it permutates through the house.

It should smell when you haven't used it for a few hours. If it is going through the whole house it is something different. Did just start happening?
Another thing is the wax ring below the toilet. The trap is actually in the toilet. So if the wax ring is bad you will get a smell but still might not leak.

Not sure when it started happening. I think it was on and off for a while. It's on the first floor only. When it happens it's very strong, but then it slowly dissipates. I can't figure out where the smell is coming from. While it's happening the smell doesn't seem to be stronger anywhere, and afterwards the toilet/sinks don't smell either.

Are both upstairs and downstairs toilets on the same soil stack? If so they might not be vented properly but that is a wild guess. I am just a DIYer and not a plumber.

Possibly. Definitely sounds like something to investigate. I guess the answer is to call a plumber.

Thanks!

If I have a small one time leak in the ceiling, is it necessary to drain the water? Or can I just let it dry?

Probably depends on the amount of water accumulated in the ceiling. If it's enough water it will find downstairs on it's own, probably by now.  If it's not too much, it'll spread out into the sheetrock and wood and dry on its own.

Can we hear the story behind it?

I'm fairly certain it's leaking from around the bath tubon the floor above, needs caulk where it's attached to the wall. This is the first time it's leaked, and it wasn't all that much water that actually came through the ceiling

Depending on the type of ceiling in can hold a fair amount of water before it starts leaking. Most just let it dry out.

Make sure to take care of the problem. You don't want the whole ceiling caving in and being moldy.

Of course. I was just asking about the remaining water in the ceiling

Drill a small hole and let it drain out.

Working on it. Put Drano down one sink that I thought may be an issue (lots of dairy that can clog up), so far no smell, but it was always on and off, so will have to wait to test more.

I have a problem where my sink clogs up about once a month.  A fix it man came over and poured down a ton of hot water and it helped a bit then he told me to buy green gobler and i used that.  it was good for a while and then it happened again so we repeated the same steps.
The problem is that it seems to be happening way too often.

My wife is convinced the problem is we eat too much fried food and are washing the oily pans in the sink.  her solution is to stop frying with oil.  Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Any leftover oil should not be poured in the sink - I put it into a shopping bag (after it cools) and throw it in the garbage
