Caution, some of these companies bait you with a low rate and switch you to a high one hoping you won't notice.

What about ambit which "guarantees" to be 1 % lower than Con-ed, could there be a catch here too?

Aren't they an MLM? 1% won't save you much either way.

Yes, they are. But 1 % is 1 %.

I wouldn't sell my soul to the devil for a few dollars a month. Besides, I wouldn't trust their guarantee.

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly can they do?

I don't know what the guarantee looks like, so I can't say, but MLM is a scam, and if they can scam their salespeople they can scam their customers too.

That's a good point. I will cancel mine now. Thanks

Sorry for reviving an old thread.

Someone just suggested I sign up for Ambit, and I thought I had seen it mentioned around here before.

Is the above the gimmick and why people should avoid it? I had read somewhere that Ambit offered an annual "refund check" if their rates to not beat ConEd. Any truth?

Correct.  In NY state they offer a "guaranteed savings plan". They guarantee to be at least 1% cheaper than you're current provider. If on any given month they miscalculated and charged you higher rates, they will mail a refund check.

As per forum rules I will not post any further details about this company.

Thanks.

@Dan -- Is mere discussion of why its a fraud prohibited or is it a rule against people involved in the MLM hawking their wares on DDF?

There's a lot of rhetoric and harsh threads we've gone through with past MLM scams (that have indeed gone sour as all pyramids eventually do), thus all discussion is banned.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.
