Impulsive = addictive. Addicts cannot control themselves. They almost always act impulsively. No discipline, not surprising. Addicts try every which way to bargain and reason with their vice. No judgments. Very interesting to see the struggle played out.

While I agree with you and I tend to argue one needs a vice in life, I picked wine, both because I love it and its a huge passion. I have no problem going without a drink, I do, often, I just fail to see the point.

If it does affect my life which it did, I adjusted accordingly.

I am not going to AA because I like a half a bottle of wine a day, you can argue all you want that i'm an addict and i'm happy to agree with you. But that is a irrelevant.

Do I spend my whole day thinking about and unable to wait till I can drink wine ? no..

I have a few hundred bottles of wine in my apartment, so your logic is that because I choose to drink half a bottle day... by this logic why am I not drinking 2 bottles a day till i pass out ? or 3 or 4

Simple test. Stop drinking for one week.

+1

Though he said he stopped 10 days before and after surgery.

An important criterion when diagnosing substance use disorder (or alcohol use disorder) is how the individual's social, interpersonal, occupational, recreational, or physical functioning is negatively affected by their use of that substance. From the information you've provided, it sounds like your functioning isn't all that affected (disclaimer: this is a massive assumption - there is much missing information here...), which means in your situation, you likely would not meet criteria for severe or even moderate alcohol use disorder. Maybe mild.

A sport bettor thinks he loves his team(s). In reality he loves the action. The way you describe yourself, you love the ritual of drinking. It fills your void. Its your "vice".
If it does affect my life which it did, I adjusted accordingly.

When you dont have wine for a period of time my guess is that you think about it more and more.
In general I hear alot of "me" and "I". What does your family think about it? One of the 20 questions is Did alcohol/drugs/gambling affect your reputation?

This sounds like a classic example of one controlling their drinking and not the other way around.

Exactly. Its only a half bottle of wine a day habit with monthly binges and semi-annual or tri-annual blackouts. Sound like he has it under control and its a very healthy activity (I mean "vice"). Time will tell. Maybe a blackout gone bad. Maybe a binge with a DUI.

beer has as much alcohol as a 1.5-oz. shot of whiskey or a 5-oz. glass of wine.” One ounce of beer contains less alcohol than one ounce of spirits, but the standard serving of beer is a 12-oz.
