I think the benefit of the current setup is like this. For example, you once wrote a comment on a topic and now you are not particularly interested in it. Someone else is interested and needs help, feedback, and maybe you will notice, have a spare minute and help them. The more posts in a thread, the more posters, the more possibility that others will see a question and help. That poster is you too, when you need help with something. Basically, because it is set up as is, more people see more posts.
The simple way out would the ability to unsubscribe to a specific thread, preferably if you are totally not connected with that topic and will not be of help to others.
