Activities: Toledo - a day trip from Madrid to see 2 old Shuls. Can hire a tour guide, Rabbi Hanoka (info@jewishtoledotour.com), which is not cheap, or can take a train on your own. 1 of the Shuls (El Transito) is closed on Mondays. @Yehuda went on a day when that Shul was closed, and the other Shul was really just an empty room and seemed like a Christian organization now runs the center. Without a tour guide, it was hard to get anything Jewish out of our trip (other than an antique store that had some Judaica). But, people who have taken the tour (discussed in the thread) have said it was great! Recommended to go with a tour or not go at all (and ensure to go on a day when both are open!). Report in the thread that the sometimes-closed Shul has audio headsets for use, so that would help. If going alone, you can research the Jewish places at the link HERE

Best way to get around anywhere in this country is by scooter. It is safer driving them there since they outnumber cars by great proportions.

I know, and about just walking around in Italy. I've done both and never felt unsafe or been pick-pocketed.

Yeah just do the same thing as you did in Italy - hold bag tight, keep valuable in inner pockets and iy"h you'll be fine. I actually know someone whose phone was pickpocketed in Spain a few weeks before I went last year, but yeah, you just gotta try to be careful.

Sounds like a plan. DW's boss's 2 year old iphone was just pickpocketed from her purse at Target a few days ago. I guess no where's safe.  ;)

Don't worry. I was told the same thing in Rome, but I didn't see any obviously Hunchback-of-Notre-Dame-style gypsies. I usually carry my wallet in a front pocket. I have trouble getting it out sometimes, so I doubt anyone else could reach in and take it without my knowledge.

any kosher food in madrid?
La Escudilla is under the supervision of the Rabbi of the 1 Orthodox Shul in Madrid. You may want to find someone who knows him and whether he is trustworthy. The red bag (original) of Lays potato chips is Kosher (as per Mashgiach of a restaurant in Barcelona) as well as Coke.

Does anyone know of someone that would host my wife and I in GIB for shabbos in January. If not for sleep then just meals. Additionally, which hotels are near the Jewish community?

I don't know about people for meals, buy if you find anything I'm interested. We're going in July.

In terms of hotels, the Eliott is nice and pretty close to shuls. That's where we plan on staying.
