Activities: Toledo - a day trip from Madrid to see 2 old Shuls. Can hire a tour guide (his contact info is somewhere in the thread), which is not cheap, or can take a train on your own. 1 of the Shuls (El Transito) is closed on Mondays. @Yehuda went on a day when that Shul was closed, and the other Shul was really just an empty room and seemed like a Christian organization now runs the center. Without a tour guide, it was hard to get anything Jewish out of our trip (other than an antique store that had some Judaica). But, people who have taken the tour (discussed in the thread) have said it was great! Recommended to go with a tour or not go at all (and ensure to go on a day when both are open!). Report in the thread that the sometimes-closed Shul has audio headsets for use, so that would help.

anyone know a good tour of cordoba?

cordoba doesnt require a tour guide in my opinion. you can walk 15 minutes from the train station to the alcazar, roman Bridge, Synagoga, etc... easy to take the bus also for a few euros which runs around the main tourist sites.

Went to the top of the rock. Would've liked to see the Gibraltar museum but didn't get a chance. We were only there for half a day.

So is there a consensus as to the kashrus of the restaurant in Madrid? Is there someone knowledgable who can be asked?

Yes, the restaurant La Escudilla is kosher, under the strict supervision of the Chief Rabbi of Spain (see Teuda attached).  It's more a matter of politics that Chabad Rabbi (Rab Goldstein) does not approve it. He would offer shabat hospitality in his house (upon payment, though)

The issue is not knowing who the Rabbi is. Without knowing much about him, anyone can just write a paper that says glatt kosher, especially in countries where the government probably doesn't oversee the kashrus industry as intensely as America.

Which I told him also when I contacted him. He sounded great (and I'm glad you enjoyed) but after paying for tours throughout Europe, I couldn't get myself to fork over another $100pp (something like that) for a tour of a city I never heard of before DDF and the Gibralter-trippers ;)
