Activities: Toledo - a day trip from Madrid to see 2 old Shuls. Can hire a tour guide, Rabbi Hanoka (info@jewishtoledotour.com), which is not cheap, or can take a train on your own. 1 of the Shuls (El Transito) is closed on Mondays. @Yehuda went on a day when that Shul was closed, and the other Shul was really just an empty room and seemed like a Christian organization now runs the center. Without a tour guide, it was hard to get anything Jewish out of our trip (other than an antique store that had some Judaica). But, people who have taken the tour (discussed in the thread) have said it was great! Recommended to go with a tour or not go at all (and ensure to go on a day when both are open!). Report in the thread that the sometimes-closed Shul has audio headsets for use, so that would help. If going alone, you can research the Jewish places at the link HERE

Anyone ever been to mallorca and have any experience there?

Went for many many years to a holiday home. Small selection of kosher frozen meat and dry goods available from the shul. Otherwise you're on fresh fish, fruit and veg.

Oh I didn't even think about looking up if there's a shul there.
What attractions do you recommend?

There is a tiny community. Services every Friday 7.30pm and irregularly Shabbat morning. No rabbi anymore. They have a few Chabad kids over from Barcelona from time to time.

http://www.cjibalears.org/

I probably still have contact details of the guy in charge who will open up the shul for food but nothing chalav yisrael, pat palter if you require that. There are one or two Jewish sites of interest in Palma but they are covert i.e. a church built on the site of an old pre-Inquisition shul. No cemeteries or anything like that.

In terms of generally, it's a beautiful island with stunning scenery, beaches etc.

Were going at the end of April from Sunday to wendsday so we probably won't need the shul. The plan is to bring food as much as we can.

Any must see things on the island?

Shul is on Carrer de Monsenyor Palmer

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@39.5698056,2.6339059,3a,75y,250.56h,76.76t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s0AQid7CP0eTr7-jFkTw4yw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1

About halfway up on the left handside. Set back from the road, doors have a couple of Magen Davids on. You can't really make it out on Google Streetview but its just before Molly Malone bar. Behind where the barrier is with the red car. Next to Chinese massage place.

Interesting kehilla - many are/were descendants on the conversos so don't count in the minyan (shul is run under MO lines). Rest are ex-pats, native Spaniards, few Israeli's etc.

Well worth exploring Palma city centre - beautiful cobbled steps, alleyways etc. Best avoid the likes of Palma Nova and Magaluf unless you want to see British teenagers at their worst excesses.

Where are you staying? We used to be in Illetas which is about 20 min drive south-west of Palma.

Looks like not far from where I used to be. Worth going to Puerto Portals in the evening to see the large boats, international crowd etc. There's also a Haagen Dazs cafe there (think HD is OU?)

HD is ou idk about the location. Closed packages are definitely good to my knowledge.
Do you recommend any hikes or drives?
Do you  think I should rent a car?
Any special requirements for renting besides a us ID and drivers license?

AFAIK no special requirements beside ID/passport and licence but I used to rent on a UK licence/ID. Renting car is probably a good idea - very hot and island is bigger than initially appears. Plus bus service slow and irregular.

Drive up into the mountains, Valldemosa, Port D'Antratx. Not sure about hikes.

Just landed in Madrid, should I go to Toledo?  I'm thinking first to hotel to see if I can get room early, drop bags and shower etc.

Is Toledo worth the hour bus ride and what's to do there
