Activities: Toledo - a day trip from Madrid to see 2 old Shuls. Can hire a tour guide, Rabbi Hanoka (info@jewishtoledotour.com), which is not cheap, or can take a train on your own. 1 of the Shuls (El Transito) is closed on Mondays. @Yehuda went on a day when that Shul was closed, and the other Shul was really just an empty room and seemed like a Christian organization now runs the center. Without a tour guide, it was hard to get anything Jewish out of our trip (other than an antique store that had some Judaica). But, people who have taken the tour (discussed in the thread) have said it was great! Recommended to go with a tour or not go at all (and ensure to go on a day when both are open!). Report in the thread that the sometimes-closed Shul has audio headsets for use, so that would help. If going alone, you can research the Jewish places at the link HERE

Hi

Can anyone make a recommendation for a tour guide for Jewish Madrid and Toledo.  I have identified two Asher Bentolila and Shlomo Hanoka and the information about them is odd because they seem to be operating off of the same website.

Thank you!

We used Shlomo Hanoka and he was excellent.

We did a tour with Asher Bentolila (Segovia, not Toledo or Madrid) and liked him a lot

Thank you very much.  On a separate matter, has anyone had issues bringing in packaged Kosher food (chess, cold cuts) to Spain?

Thanks

I will be in Madrid 1/15 from 9:55AM - 5:00 PM. Anyone know the shuls and minyanim, if I can get a Mincha/Maariv.
Also how easy is it to get ot the shul train/ any other suggestions.
Also anything really worth it to check out in Madrid over these hours.

There may be a mincha just before shkia, but no mincha gedola. You can explore the city, whatever sights you want, and just daven on your own. Also, if you have to be on a flight at 5:00pm, there's no way you'll be able to daven with a minyan. You need to specify if the times above are arrival and departure times or times you'll have in the city.

I would recommend the double decker bus. You can see everything in under 7 hours and most probably also use that to get to the Shuls. In my opinion the best thing to see is the Palace (and a bull fight).

Hi,
My wife and daughter are doing a trip in May. What is a safe and enjoyable neighborhood for them to book a hotel?

How do i find more info on Bull fighting?

And any must see attractions? I read in this thread that one old shul is just an empty room. She has 3 days, and yes, one day will be with a guide( as it is expensive) so i am looking for other things for her to do that she can do on her own.

Which City? If Barcelona, which I assume from your reference to the old Shul, I recommend Gaudi's colorful Parc Guell as well as La Pedera, a/k/a Casa Mila. The latter was very interesting, I recommend you take the audio tour which starts with an elevator ride to the roof, one of the main attractions, and then walks you down. We enjoyed walking around Barcelona, not so much La Rambla, which is a bit too Times Square touristy, but rather the Passieg de Garcia and nearby streets. We stayed at the Le Meridien right off La Rambla, which was very nice, and we ate at the nearby Restaurant Maccabi, an excellent restaurant with great food, and also took out from Shaq Shuq a few blocks away.

She is staying in Madrid.....but everything depends on a safe neighborhood.

If Barcelona is safer, she will stay there. She wants to be able to walk the streets without worry, go for kosher food and be able to do a walking tour.

In Madrid, there is Pinati Restaurant, and another nearby, a few blocks from each other and close to the heavily guarded shul, where you will need a passport to enter. The Prado Museum is amazing if you appreciate art. Shlomo Hanoka gave us a great day tour from Madrid to Toledo, highlighting the Jewish history in a very meaningful way.

Safety in any City may be a matter of common sense, there are good and bad neighborhoods everywhere, and obviously safer times of day to walk around. Nowadays, unfortunately, it would be safer not to flaunt Jewish identity in unfamiliar areas. Neither City is Boro Park or Yerushalyim.
