I do remember hearing that some Jewish passengers who were stranded in IST during Protective Edge had to be taken to a separate room because they were assaulted in the airport.
Yes, it was discussed on this thread. Seems to have been an isolated incident (the kind that could happen anywhere). You may as well be scared to fly to LAX:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_Los_Angeles_International_Airport_shooting
As I said in my long post above, in IST I felt basically like I was in just any airport and wouldn't have even known I was in the Middle East.

Just flew Turkish in J for a short haul and a long haul. I was blown away by the service on the short haul- the best I've ever received on an airplane. The long haul was good too, but a bit slow with a full J cabin.

I would not hesitate to fly them again. And actually, I might even pay a small premium to fly them in Y to TLV, even with the layover (maybe $50-$100 more). I'm just about sick of LY/UA/DL's service. Never tried the US flight.

New rumors are that Turkish is leasing two Malaysian a380's.

I just wanted to post an addendum to my very long TR above. On our return flight to JFK, they damaged our stroller. The canopy was slightly ripped. We went to the Turkish Airlines desk before we left the airport and within 10 minutes we had a case number and were instructed to email the appropriate department. Once I did that, they asked me for some things like pictures of the damage, a copy of my boarding pass and passport, a receipt for the stroller, etc. I scanned and sent it to them. Then they asked me to snail mail them a signed release form agreeing to accept their payment (The price I paid for the stroller!) as a full resolution of the claim. Once I mailed it, within about 2 weeks, I received the check and just deposited it. Any delays in getting this check were due to my laziness and time constraints. They were very helpful and accommodating. I was quite impressed with the very little hassle they gave me. So, once again, my experience with Turkish was very good. I would almost be upset if I were forced to take another airline the next time I went to Israel because the other airline offered a far lower price (Ukraine, Aeroflot, etc). And I wish that airlines like El Al would get with the program so that I would want to fly with them more.

I didn't go out when I had a layover there but as far as the actual airport, it's pretty nice. Decent amount of shops that you can walk through and check out. Definitely enough to kill a couple of hours...

Exactly. Come to think of it, I don't think I've actually ever seen anyone buy something at an airport. Always overpriced.
