Exactly. Come to think of it, I don't think I've actually ever seen anyone buy something at an airport. Always overpriced.
Overpriced is an understatement

I was there twice first time was for nine hours and was too dangerous to leave the airport (due to major riots in taking square) , so I payed  for lounge access and lounged.
My second time I had a seventeen hour stopover, davened in the airport early morning and took the bus into town. Ended up paying for the hop on hop off bus to be able to catch as much as possible.

I have heard that for stopovers longer than five hours on Turkish they offer a tour into Istanbul which would be a great alternative, because big groups are inadvertently safer. (the tourist visa costed $20 at a desk in the airport value for three months)

The Turkish lounge is a gorgeous and massive lounge. Try getting into that one.

Why did you take such long layovers?
When I booked the first ticket it was with the intention of leaving the airport. However shortly after booking the situation deteriorated and I was unable to utilize my stopover.

The next time was a couple of months later and although there was still some rioting of wasn't that dangerous anymore, so I maximized the opportunity.

Only problem was that this was my last stop on a twenty day backpacking trip through Europe and Africa (Morocco) so honesty was too bombed to truly appreciate the beauty of the city.
It's very high up on my places to revisit list

I davened at the gate and had no issues at all. There were a couple of others with me as well too (no minyan though). Actually felt more comfortable davening there than I did in France.

Do you think it would be a better idea to daven in one of the lounges?

I mean there will be less people in the lounge, especially if you are landing early in the morning, and it's generally easier to find a quiet corner in a lounge. But really wouldn't worry about it either way.

I created an Istanbul master thread in destination and trip reports it will be more appropriate there and won't clog up the airport thread

My transatlantic flights had wifi. If the flight has wifi it's free (at least it was as of a few months ago).

Find someone with a lounge pass an ask if you can go in with them.
