What should be added to your wallet - Prioritized
« on: June 30, 2011, 10:49:21 PM »
Hey guys. I wanna start a "top ten" style list of what each person thinks are the best current offers on CCs for all of us newbies who are adding to their arsenal a few cards every few months.

(We can't add 25+ card at once to meet Dan & Asher so where should we start?)

example list: (1=highest priority)

1) Amex Plat (match to 100k)
2) Amex Gold consumer (match to 75k)
3) Amex Gold business (match to 75k)
4) Chase Hyatt (see forums)
5) Chase Continental (match to 50k)
6) ...dunno still researching

yeah I guess so. I am not really in a position to give a prioritized list. I am still unsure of all of this. I am about to apply for amex gold business but it seems the "pros" haven't. So I don't know if I know what I am doing.

It really depends on a person's credit situation, needs, spend patterns, rewards/redemption patterns, priorities etc. to determine what cards are best for them. Each card has different signup bonuses, different credit requirements, what rewards it offers, and any other card-specific data. Based on that data one can determine which cards to apply for.

Dan's Credit Card Links post should be a good starting point for anyone.

I just don't see what you mean. Patterns? Spending habits?

I take a couple of cards every few months - the ones next on the list with best value of reward - and that becomes my primary card for all expenses. That's it.

Amex plat - value A+ (1st) - golds A (2nd) - and onward I go.

p.s. I missed the sapphire or that would have preceded the golds.

There are other factors that might be important to some people, like waived baggage fees, purchase protection, free car rental insurance, cashback/bonus rewards categories, etc etc (the list can go on forever).

There are also other factors to the 'couple of cards every few months' paradigm. It depends what issuers pull from which bureaus in your state, whether you have to freeze reports and whether it'll work for those issuers, what income you're reporting compared to your outstanding credit with that issuer etc. etc. (this list goes on and on too).

My point isn't to point out these specific factors, I'm just establishing that there's more factors than you're considering when compiling your list. Maybe your oversimplification will work for some people, but it gets more complex when you have 20+ cards open.

Hmmm. I guess you are right. Especially about the credit bureau stuff. Total ignoramus on that for now.

As I move up the ladder I guess I am going to have to hit the books forums and read up.
