And the Basic Apps you referring to, is Calender Alarm Clock and Stopwatch, nothing more then that,  would say even less than a Reg. Basic Phone.
and if you have a few hundreds contacts it will take at least 30-60 seconds to load all of them, and when you try searching a  contact it'll take some time as well.

No email? Is there a limit on contacts? Does it sync with Google contacts?

you can have Email and import your Contact from Gmail or Outlook,
i don't thing there's a limit of Contacts, but, if there's more than 50 contacts it'll take some time for the contacts to load.

Does not sync constantly, you can import them.
