GPS for vacations
« on: July 12, 2011, 08:22:57 AM »
Going to LA in August and was wondering which GPS would be recommended to get for the trip. It's a 4 day trip and being that I have never driven there, I don't know the roads to say the least. So I guess I'm willing to "invest" in a GPS for vacations. I noticed that theres a few websites that rent them...worth it to rent?

Never thought about renting, but now that some come with lifetime updates I'd recommend that. Roads change and if you are in a place you dont know you can get lost. I use the tomtom from samsclub with lifetime maps I think it's about $140 and I'm satisfied.

Nooooooooo never rent, some places have a Gmach, otherwise renting will cost you as much as buying one (obviously not as good).

Its been discussed, personally I prefer TomTom (more options) some like Garmin (more user friendly/less options). Dan said that TomTom had problems with their algortihms although I think that may have been corrected.

the best out there is def. the garmin and if ur worried about options u must be completely illiterate wen it comes to technology of any sorts, the options are so
simple that i have seen little children use it, i dont think that u should rent cause alot of times the gps's dont work so well. if u look at the main site dan
posts deals for garmins for as low as $99 def. worth the investment and will pay itself off if ur considering renting.

Reviving old thread, I'm looking to buy a new GPS, I find that with the Garmin I had until now it takes quite a while until it finds the satellite and sometimes I'm halfway there when it figures it out and then it constantly re-routes itself even when I don't make a wrong turn. Is the Tom Tom a better gps? If yes, which product is best?

For some reason I haven't been able to get used to using GPS on a phone and much prefer one made specifically for the car. Recommendations still needed...thanks.

Then garmin

I tried 2 garmins, wasn't happy. Takes about 20 minutes of driving to get satellite plus it kept re-routing me even when I was following their directions.

No never rent unless it's from somebody you know who is giving it to you for pennies. Ease is obviously the best but if you want a reg one the best bet is prob Garmin Nuvi 50 which isn't so expensive
