I heard a segment this morning on Bloomberg where Tom Keene asked his guest (I think it was the author of this book) how much bigger Amazon will be five years from now. The guest ran through a scenario of Amazon taking over each and every aspect of our lives, with an Alexa butler doing everything for us (just say that you want a party for 7 people, and Alexa will handle everything), to the extent that the government will end up breaking up Amazon, hence it will be a smaller company five years from today.

It got me thinking to what extent are Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Google a part of almost everyone's life.

Amazon is totally inescapable, due to AWS.

At first I thought that I have nothing to do with Facebook, but then I remembered that they own WhatsApp.

Almost everyone has a Gmail address, and they own Waze, along with so many other technologies and patents.

Not sure about Apple. Ever since I switched to an iPhone I've gained more respect for the company, but I'm not so sure they are an integral part of everyone's life, as much as the other 3 are, for people that aren't part of the Apple ecosystem, like I was for many years.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Even Apple uses AWS, though I recall recently hearing that they made some acquisition in order to enable them to move off AWS.

It might also be true that if not for the AWS business, Amazon wouldn't survive. AWS is their cash cow.

I don't know why, but somehow I don't see this attractive enough to pick up steam. For other services it offers you don't need to pay this price, and for just the styles, hmmmm... Just my gut feeling, I don't know why. (FTR I own an echo since when it was first released.)

They're like Apple; they make enough money to be able to afford to "test" things out (i.e.m put in the skunk money to develop it) and see what sticks.

Was thinking around those lines. It can even be that they themselves know that this product as a stand-alone isn't attractive enough, but they are using it as a catalyst toward something much more robust.

NOTHING is stand alone w/ these guys...all part of their "universe". Plus they're developing technology (or have already developed it) to implement more services to further integrate yet some things are too intrusive to introduce all at once.

I know my wife would be upset if she heard me talking to Alexa, lol.

I talk all the time for fun. My wife doesn't mind. Though, it's only available when I actually bring home my wifi from work. Otherwise it's used as a bluetooth speaker for the kids. Music, story tapes when they go to bed etc.

Funniest is when it just goes off randomly in the middle of a Shabbos seuda "I can't connect to your wifi network. Please check the help section in the Alexa app..."

Since AWS is all over this anyway as @Dan said, they'll now work on the Shabbos Alexa

I got my invitation today. The idea is basically, till now they were stalking on us only via audio, now they have eyes on us too.

P.S. If anyone is interested but not getting the invite I can order it for them.
